Melody of the Builders 16

“Don’t tell me that bastard has abandoned me now.” Kyte leapt back from his exchange with Varen and Melody and momentarily turned his attention to the airship above. With the cannon fire ceased and Kyte at the disadvantage everyone joined Chain and Kyte in turning their eyes to the sky. Well above the pit a massive airship comprised of numerous catwalks, decks, gondola cars, and rigging wrapped around a core of five zeppelins loomed above with cannon ports still smoking from the barrage they had but ceased moments ago. From the body of one of the zeppelins a port opened and a single man descended by wire and winch on an L-shaped frame. The sight of the man made Kyte click his tongue in disgust. “You bastard Beaks. Disgracing descent from an airship in such a cowardly way.” The man Kyte referred to as Beaks was quite a sight. Dressed in a coat he wore like a cape of gaudy conglomeration of lab coat, military dress coat, and a cape with flashy epaulettes on already over-padde...

“Everyone! Get down!”     Melody screamed at Wherks and Mail who joined her on a path around the pit that Chain had stepped out onto a ledge in as a rain of cannon fire rained into the pit. In an instant the situation in the once beautiful pit beneath the gondola station changed as it was reduced to flaming ruin under the aerial assault. Melody could only marvel at the precision of the cannon fire as she and the two who joined her were untouched by all but the clouds of dust thrown into the air. Across the pit and above from where Melody was Kyte took advantage of the sudden assault to leap away from Elliot. “As I said Chainmaid; had.” Kyte twirled his spear around into a combat stance to accept Elliot’s eminent attack but grew distracted when he saw Chain’s cape disperse into a shadowy mist and then nothingness as she suddenly leapt from the ledge into the devastated pit. “Is she crazy?” “Lord Elliot! I’ll deal with him but Chain will need your help.” “Of co...

“Tch!”     Kyte clicked his tongue as his attempt to skewer Chain was interrupted not by the maid or Varen but rather an ornate silver spear. The weapon had appeared in a flash of sunlight forcing Kyte to reverse his charge and leap back as the weapon impaled itself between him and Chain and cast up a cloud of dust. Shrouded in the dust Kyte had any number of ways he could approach resuming his attack but knew he did not likely have the time as whoever threw the spear was faster than him. Expecting such Kyte could not help himself but smile as a beautiful young man with blond hair and emerald eyes garbed in silver plate and blue cloth descended from the sky   As he landed Elliot put the ornate silver long sword he wielded in his right hand to use by striking just behind the head of Kyte’s spear and planted it in the ground. Releasing his sword for only an instant Elliot took it up in a reverse grip and ran it right up the spear shaft and past Kyte’s arms stoppin...

“Just so you know Chain, I wasn’t thinking of actually joining him in his hunt for the Bandit King. I was listening to what he had to say because he seemed pretty convinced that the Bandit King would be after you again and from what I saw when we did encounter him I didn’t see it as implausible.” “You’re being so heartless tall man.” “Will the both of you just shut up already? I said what I had to say and now it’s time for you two idiots to see what I wanted to show you.” With a groan Chain accelerated down the narrow passage she lead Varen and Kyte down forcing the two men to up their pace. At such a brisk pace it did not take the group long to reach the end of the passage and they stepped out onto a grass covered ledge that overlooked a massive pit. Bathed in the golden crimson light of sunset the pit was a sight to behold as the floor of the pit and any cliff which was not vertical was covered in grass and blooming flowers. From above the shadows of gondola cars and cabl...
